It has arrived at the heart of global energy systems. This was the central message of the recent <strong data-start=\"556\" data-end=\"594\">Global Conference on Energy and AI<\/strong> the <strong data-start=\"599\" data-end=\"639\">International Energy Agency (IEA)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"642\" data-end=\"906\">With the <strong data-start=\"650\" data-end=\"684\">GCG - German Commodities Group<\/strong> we are closely monitoring the interface between energy infrastructure, digitalization and market dynamics. Because it directly affects what we do: <strong data-start=\"835\" data-end=\"905\">Develop sustainable, economical and secure energy systems<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"908\" data-end=\"911\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"913\" data-end=\"973\"><strong data-start=\"916\" data-end=\"973\">The IEA initiative: \"Energy for AI &amp; AI for energy\"<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"975\" data-end=\"1242\">With the launch of the initiative <strong data-start=\"1004\" data-end=\"1039\">\"Energy for AI &amp; AI for Energy\"<\/strong> the IEA is opening a decisive new chapter in global energy strategy. This initiative addresses two parallel, closely interlinked and accelerating developments:<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1244\" data-end=\"1280\">1. <strong data-start=\"1251\" data-end=\"1278\">Energy demand through AI:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1281\" data-end=\"1490\">The rapid growth of AI models, cloud computing and data centers is leading to an explosive increase in power consumption - faster than the expansion of our network infrastructure and planning cycles.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1492\" data-end=\"1530\">2. <strong data-start=\"1499\" data-end=\"1528\">AI for the energy system:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1531\" data-end=\"1730\">At the same time, AI offers powerful tools to make energy systems more efficient, resilient and climate-friendly - from power grids to battery storage and forecasting models.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1732\" data-end=\"1735\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"1737\" data-end=\"1780\"><strong data-start=\"1740\" data-end=\"1780\">Facts that require attention<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1782\" data-end=\"1812\">The conference made it clear:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1814\" data-end=\"2210\">\n<li data-start=\"1814\" data-end=\"1955\">\n<p data-start=\"1816\" data-end=\"1955\"><strong data-start=\"1816\" data-end=\"1841\">Global data centers<\/strong> could up to <strong data-start=\"1854\" data-end=\"1890\">More than 1,000 TWh per year in 2026<\/strong> - the equivalent of Japan's entire electricity consumption.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1956\" data-end=\"2057\">\n<p data-start=\"1958\" data-end=\"2057\">In the US state of <strong data-start=\"1976\" data-end=\"1988\">Virginia<\/strong> data centers already do <strong data-start=\"2018\" data-end=\"2052\">30 % of the total electricity consumption<\/strong> from.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2058\" data-end=\"2109\">\n<p data-start=\"2060\" data-end=\"2109\">In <strong data-start=\"2063\" data-end=\"2073\">Ireland<\/strong> the proportion is around <strong data-start=\"2100\" data-end=\"2108\">20 %<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2110\" data-end=\"2210\">\n<p data-start=\"2112\" data-end=\"2210\">At the same time, global electricity consumption is growing <strong data-start=\"2159\" data-end=\"2181\">Twice as fast<\/strong> as the total energy requirement.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2212\" data-end=\"2347\">With the accelerated pace of <strong data-start=\"2245\" data-end=\"2285\">Electrification and digitalization<\/strong> This has a massive impact on planning and infrastructure.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2349\" data-end=\"2352\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"2354\" data-end=\"2421\"><strong data-start=\"2357\" data-end=\"2421\">Strategic pressure points: Location, supply, flexibility<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2423\" data-end=\"2551\">What does this mean for companies like GCG that work at the interface between energy generation, infrastructure and market design?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2553\" data-end=\"2834\">In short: <strong data-start=\"2566\" data-end=\"2624\">Network connection, infrastructure planning and PPA structures<\/strong> (Power Purchase Agreements) are becoming even more strategic.<br data-start=\"2679\" data-end=\"2682\" \/>AI <strong data-start=\"2685\" data-end=\"2717\">not only consumes energy<\/strong> - it changes <strong data-start=\"2734\" data-end=\"2762\">who when and where how much<\/strong> consumed - and how <strong data-start=\"2784\" data-end=\"2799\">Reliable<\/strong> this consumption profile must be.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2836\" data-end=\"3077\">The conference was attended by technology giants such as <strong data-start=\"2884\" data-end=\"2916\">Google, Microsoft and Nvidia<\/strong> with energy suppliers such as <strong data-start=\"2943\" data-end=\"2965\">EDF, TotalEnergies<\/strong> and governments of the <strong data-start=\"2988\" data-end=\"3040\">USA, France, Brazil, Japan and the UAE<\/strong> together. The common realization:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"3079\" data-end=\"3226\">\n<p data-start=\"3081\" data-end=\"3226\"><strong data-start=\"3081\" data-end=\"3179\">We need more base load capacity, new storage solutions and smarter grid integration<\/strong>to operate the AI economy sustainably.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr data-start=\"3228\" data-end=\"3231\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"3233\" data-end=\"3276\"><strong data-start=\"3236\" data-end=\"3276\">AI as a tool for the energy transition<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3278\" data-end=\"3402\">AI is not just a new kind of burden - it is also a <strong data-start=\"3337\" data-end=\"3359\">Powerful tool<\/strong>in order to <strong data-start=\"3368\" data-end=\"3401\">Accelerating the energy transition<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3404\" data-end=\"3756\">\n<li data-start=\"3404\" data-end=\"3521\">\n<p data-start=\"3406\" data-end=\"3521\"><strong data-start=\"3406\" data-end=\"3426\">Network optimization:<\/strong> AI improves transparency, reduces overload and supports smarter investments.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3522\" data-end=\"3642\">\n<p data-start=\"3524\" data-end=\"3642\"><strong data-start=\"3524\" data-end=\"3548\">Battery innovation:<\/strong> Generative AI accelerates the discovery of new materials for modern storage technologies.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3643\" data-end=\"3756\">\n<p data-start=\"3645\" data-end=\"3756\"><strong data-start=\"3645\" data-end=\"3659\">Forecasts:<\/strong> AI improves the accuracy of forecasts for renewable energy generation and weather events.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3758\" data-end=\"3910\">Example: Google's project <strong data-start=\"3784\" data-end=\"3798\">\"Tapestry\"<\/strong> helps to map network structures and supports <strong data-start=\"3850\" data-end=\"3860\">Chile's<\/strong> Transition to a <strong data-start=\"3879\" data-end=\"3909\">climate-neutral electricity system<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3912\" data-end=\"3915\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"3917\" data-end=\"3953\"><strong data-start=\"3920\" data-end=\"3953\">GCG: Rethinking infrastructure<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3955\" data-end=\"4078\">At GCG, we are convinced: it's time, <strong data-start=\"3996\" data-end=\"4034\">Rethinking infrastructure planning<\/strong>.
